About Commissions
What is the Role of the Commissions?
The Association’s Commissions help to identify emerging policy issues and professional development needs of its membership. The Commissions also serve to help build a leadership pool for UPCEA and the field of professional and continuing higher education. Service on a Commission offers a unique opportunity to interact with professional peers from across the country and to contribute to the field.
How are Commissioners Selected?
Commissioners are drawn from a cross-section of disciplines and geographic regions. To encourage a broad field of candidates for these positions, all members of the Association are encouraged to submit the names of up to four nominees (including yourself, if you are interested in serving). Nominations may be for any of the four Commissions, although nominees may be asked to serve on a Commission other than the Commission(s) indicated on the nomination form. All professional members are eligible for nomination, including those Commissioners whose terms will expire this year. From these nominations, a slate of nominees will be assembled that is reflective of different institutional types and sizes, the diversity of the Association’s membership, the representation of the Association’s regions, and the fields of professional expertise necessary for each Commission. Every UPCEA professional member will receive a ballot for this election.
What are the responsibilities of a Commissioner?
A Commissioner serves a three-year term, and is required to attend three Commission meetings each year (held in June, January, and April). Approximately one-third of the Commissioner slots are open each year; half of these slots are filled through election by the professional members of the Association, and half are filled by appointments made by the Association’s Leadership Committee.
The Commissions typically meet in January and June of each year,
as well as at the Association's Annual Conference in the spring.
